What determines the value of a diamond ring
A proper valuation considers the diamond, the precious metal and the ring as a complete piece. A high-quality stone, original antique setting or recognised maker can add value well beyond the gold or platinum content.
The diamond 4Cs
- Carat: the stone's weight; two diamonds of equal weight can still have very different values.
- Color: the amount of colour in a white diamond, or the strength of colour in a fancy-colour stone.
- Clarity: internal inclusions and surface features examined under magnification.
- Cut: proportions, symmetry and polish, which determine how effectively the stone reflects light.
A reliable offer cannot be calculated from a photograph or diameter alone. The stone must be examined under magnification and verified with professional equipment.
Does a GIA, IGI or HRD certificate help?
Yes. A report from a recognised laboratory records the parameters of a specific diamond and makes valuation faster. A certificate is not essential, however. We can verify and assess a ring without one. Bring the original box, receipt and any documents if available.
Gold, platinum and the complete piece
After assessing the stone, we verify the metal purity and weigh the ring on a certified scale. Diamond rings are commonly made from 585 or 750 gold, but platinum is also frequent. Current indicative precious-metal rates are available in our price list.
Antique and branded rings may also be valued for their period, maker, originality and condition. See our guide to identifying valuable antique jewellery.
How to sell a diamond ring safely
- Leave the stone in its setting and do not attempt to remove it at home.
- Bring all certificates and documents that belong to the ring.
- Ask for the stone and metal to be assessed in front of you.
- Confirm that the valuation is non-binding and free of hidden fees.
- Decide only after the assessment and final offer have been explained.
