When is jewellery considered antique?
Antique commonly describes jewellery more than about one hundred years old, but valuation also covers fine later pieces from Art Nouveau, Art Deco, the interwar period and post-war studio makers. Age alone does not create value: quality, originality and collector interest are essential.
Period and style
Recognising the style and date can materially affect value. Art Nouveau uses organic lines and coloured stones, while Art Deco favours geometry, contrast and diamonds. Construction, settings and clasp types can help narrow down the period.
Hallmarks, maker's marks and provenance
Hallmarks can indicate metal, purity and sometimes date. A maker's mark or signature may add substantial value. Original boxes, receipts, photographs and family records can help document provenance. See our guide to Czech hallmarks.
Gemstones and originality
Diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, Czech garnets and pearls are assessed separately. It matters whether stones and settings are original to the piece. Diamonds are judged by the 4Cs; coloured stones by colour, clarity, cut, treatments and origin.
Condition, repairs and cleaning
A sensitive period repair may be acceptable, while poor soldering, replaced clasps or missing stones can reduce value. Do not polish, chemically clean or dismantle antique jewellery before valuation. Original surfaces and patina may form part of its appeal.
When is value higher than the metal price?
Fine workmanship, originality, recognised makers, desirable periods and quality gemstones can lift value above the gold or silver content. This applies to rings, brooches, earrings, bracelets, necklaces and complete suites.
Preparing antique jewellery for valuation
- Leave the piece in its current condition and avoid chemical cleaning.
- Bring its box, documents, photographs and any detached parts.
- For an estate, photograph or bring the whole group together.
- Ask for the metal, stones and antique value to be considered separately.
