Start with the hallmark
Gold jewellery often carries a hallmark such as 585 or 750. The number indicates purity. However, older or worn jewellery may have missing or unreadable marks.
Magnet test is only a rough clue
Gold is not magnetic, but many non-magnetic metals are not gold either. A magnet test can reveal some fakes, but it cannot confirm authenticity.
Weight and colour
Gold has a characteristic weight and colour, but plating and alloys can mislead. Visual checks are useful only as a first step.
Professional testing
In our Prague 1 shop we use testing equipment and check hallmarks without damaging the item. The valuation is free and non-binding.
